How to request a refund on a game purchase on Steam

Bear In mind that you can only request refunds to games that you purchased directly on the Steam platform. If you activated the game via Steam key, you cannot request a refund.

To request a refund for a game on Steam, you can follow these steps:

  • Navigate to your game library and select the game you wish to refund.
  • Click on Support.
  • Select either “Gameplay or technical issue” or “It’s not what I expected”.
  • If you selected “Gameplay or technical Issue” you would need to specify what the exact problem you have with the game further. Afterwards choose “I’d like to request a refund”.
  • Now steam will automatically refund you if you meed the following criteria:

Generally, you can request a refund for a game within 14 days of purchase, as long as you have played it for less than two hours. However, there might be some exceptions or specific conditions depending on the game and the circumstances. Sometimes when a game gets released in an extremely broken state, Steam sometime will allow refunds even if you played for more than 2 hours.

How long does a steam refund take?

After submitting your refund request on Steam, the processing time can vary depending on several factors. Typically, Steam aims to process refunds within a few hours to a few days. However, in some cases, it may take longer, especially during peak periods (typically during major sale events) or if additional review is required.

Once your refund is approved, the timing of receiving the funds back to your original payment method can also vary. Here are some general guidelines:

  • If you made the purchase using a credit or debit card, it may take a few days for the refunded amount to appear in your account. The exact time frame depends on your bank and their processing times.
  • If you used PayPal or another similar digital payment method, the refund should usually show in your account within 24 to 48 hours.
  • If you made the purchase using a Steam Wallet balance, the refunded amount should be credited back to your Steam Wallet immediately after the refund is approved.

Remember that the above timelines are approximate and can vary based on individual circumstances. If you don’t receive your refund within a reasonable time frame or have any concerns, it’s recommended to contact Steam Support for further assistance.

What to do if steam support declined your refund request?

If steam support declined your refund request it means that you either played for over 2 hours or tried to refund the game past 14 days of purchase.

In some rare cases steam will refund you even if you don’t meet the above criteria as a costumer gesture. It’s worth trying to send multiple refund requests and you may get lucky, however don’t spam too much as Steam might block your refund ability altogether.

Good luck!
